White Dental Fillings

Ideally, no one would get the cavities (caries) caused by tooth decay. But the reality is most of us end up with small cavities or tooth fracture from time. Scarsdale dentists Dr. David Furnari and Dr. Nick Mobilia provide patients with white fillings, also known as composite fillings, to repair teeth that have been affected by decay, fractures or other similar conditions. White fillings look more natural than their metal alloy counterparts, so you can smile, laugh and chat with friends without feeling self-conscious.

What Is a White, or Composite, Filling?

As the name suggests, the team at SDG uses tooth colored fillings to fill the cavity, or void, that advanced decay can create in teeth. He can also use a filling to fill cracks or fractures in teeth. Fillings can be made with different dentistry materials, such as metal alloy. White fillings are made of composite resin; that is the reason that they are also referred to as composite fillings.

The main advantage of white fillings is an aesthetic one: The team at SDG can closely match the shade of the filling to the color of existing teeth, making them unnoticeable. A second advantage of a white filling is that Dr. Furnari does not have to remove as much of the healthy portion of the tooth (to hold the filling in place) as he does with other dental restoration options. This is because the material used in a white filling more easily bonds to the tooth than other materials do.

What to Expect During Treatment With Filling

Treatment with white fillings typically requires just one visit to The Scarsdale Dental Group (SDG). Once the patient has been comfortably anesthetized with topical and a local anesthetic the doctor will remove the tooth decay. The cavity is than isolated and cleaned; an adhesive resin is applied. The adhesive is cured with a bright blue light (near ultraviolet). The tooth colored space age resins are than applied and cured again with the blue light. Finally the doctor will adjust the bite to your maximal comfort and function.

You may notice that the treated tooth is more sensitive to chewing or temperature in the first day or two. This should subside with time, please however call the office if the sensitivity lasts for more than a few days to a week. A short follow up appointment may be necessary to adjust the bite.

Additional Options

Scarsdale Dental also offers custom restorative options that are protective and esthetically pleasing. These include porcelain inlays and onlays. Scarsdale Dental typically uses inlays and onlays to restore teeth that have moderate to advanced decay or wear along the biting. These customized lab milled ceramic restorations help prevent tooth fracture. Scarsdale Dental can apply inlays and onlays to the chewing surfaces of back teeth if you are concerned about aesthetics in that area.

Things to Keep in Mind With White Fillings

Although white fillings look more like natural teeth than silver amalgam fillings do, the doctors at Scarsdale Dental may not be able to offer this option to patients who have a large amount of decay. The Doctors at SDG provide other cosmetic dentistry options for these patients including all ceramic crowns back teeth and conservative porcelain veneers on broken down or chipped front teeth.
