IimplantWhat Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant (also known as an endosseous implant or fixture) is an artificial tooth root that Dr. Furnari surgically inserts into the upper or lower jaw bone which serves as a foundation for a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge or dentures or to act as an orthodontic anchor. The dental implant and crown (or bridge or dentures) collectively serve as a replacement tooth (or teeth) that is (are) strong, supportive and resilient enough to perform all the functions of natural teeth.

Whether you have lost one tooth or multiple teeth due to; physical trauma, gum disease, injury or any other reason, dental implants may be the perfect option to replace your teeth, restore your smile and regain your confidence. Dr. Furnari can insert dental implants to:

  • Support a crown, bridge or denture, making the fixtures more secure and comfortable
  • Secure loose dentures
  • Improve or restore facial tissues
  • Preventing the existing teeth from drifting into any empty space left by the missing ones
  • Change one or multiple missing teeth without affecting the neighboring teeth
  • Restore speech, chewing and digestion

Types of Dental Implants

There are two types of dental implants: endosteal (in the jaw bone) and subperiosteal (on the jaw bone). Dr. Furnari in most cases utilizes the endosteal titanium implants as they provide the maximum support for crowns and other dental fixtures. Titanium implants are most often cylindrical or tapered (like a tooth root) with threads like a screw to stabilize them in the bone. He surgically implants one of these into the jawbone, where it securely holds one or multiple artificial teeth.

For patients that do not have sufficient jaw bone height to support an endosteal implant, Dr. Furnari utilizes subperiosteal implants. This type of dental implants consists of a metal frame that is fitted onto the top of the jaw just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Metal posts, which are attached to the frame, protrude through the gums, which is when Dr. Furnari mounts the artificial tooth to the posts.

Suitable Candidates for Dental Implants

Candidates for dental implants should ideally have the following:

  • Reasonably good general and oral health
  • No active endodontic infections.
  • Stable controlled blood sugar especially if patient is diabetic
  • Adequate bone in the jaw or the desire to allow Dr. Furnari to develop the bone
  • Healthy gum tissues
  • Willing to eliminate periodontal disease even if it requires tooth removal
  • Nonsmokers are more likely to have treatment without complications

What to Expect During Dental Implant Treatment

Dr. David Furnari and the Scarsdale Dental Group have the expertise in replacing a single missing tooth or multiple teeth with:

1) Single dental implant and a single crown.

2) Recommending implant-supported bridges to replace several teeth

3) Full implant supported bridge to replace a full arch of teeth,
Custom Screw retained Zerconia or traditional Porcelain fused to white gold

4) Zest Locator attached (snap on) realistic and lip supporting over-dentures

Dr. Furnari may perform sinus augmentation or sinus lift if you do not have sufficient bone quality or quantity in the upper posterior bicuspid and molar area. When this occurs the doctor can use special instrumentation to add bone between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are on either side of the nose. To make room for the bone, the sinus membrane has to be gently moved upward or lifted. This is practically painless as there are very few nerves in this area. Once the sinus membrane is lifted, additional bone can be added to create the necessary bone height for future implant placements.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or the patient’s own bone is taken from the jaw, hip or tibia (below the knee). Certain patients may have abnormalities in the lower or upper jaw that leave them with insufficient bone quantity to support implants. In these cases, Dr. Furnari may perform Ridge Augmentation. During this treatment, Dr. Furnari lifts the gum away from the ridge to uncover the bone abnormality. He then fills the defect with artificial or natural bone to augment the ridge enough to support implants. Bone grafting like this is routine (a standard of care) especially in conjunction with tooth extraction.

Proper Care for Dental Implants

Implants are a safe, well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. It’s probably true to say that implants, much like natural teeth, will last for as long as you care for them. Dental implants need to be treated the same way you would care for your natural teeth. That means you must practice good oral hygiene, brush your teeth and implants twice a day, flossing daily and rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash. In addition, be sure to visit The Scarsdale Dental Group for regular dental checkups and cleanings.
