Ceramic Dental Crowns

Sometimes our smiles need a little assistance to look their best, and Dr. David Furnari, an expert Scarsdale cosmetic dentist, can help. At Scarsdale Dental Group (SDG), Dr. Furnari employs veneers, dental implants and crowns to restore radiance to patients smiles.

With ceramic crowns, the skillful cosmetic dentistry provider can fix a chipped tooth, a fractured filling and many other problems that may be adversely affecting your smile. Read on for more information about how ceramic crowns can rejuvenate your smile.

What is a Crown?

Dr. Furnari places a crown, or cap, over the surface of a tooth, encapsulating all of the original tooth material. He can use a crown to strengthen a decaying or damaged tooth, or improve the shape, size, alignment or look of a tooth. Dr. Furnari may also place a crown on top of a dental implant (i.e., a metal fixture that serves as a base for a crown or dental bridge when there is not enough tooth material to support a crown conventionally) to look and function like a natural tooth. Dr. Furnari may also recommend a crown if he cannot use a traditional white dental filling to restore a tooth with a large cavity.

Specifically, Dr. Furnari may advise a crown for one of the following reasons:

  • CrownTo replace a big filling when not enough tooth material remains
  • To protect a weak tooth from cracking
  • To fix a fractured tooth
  • To cover an implant
  • To attach to a bridge
  • To attach to a dental implant and provide the look of a natural tooth
  • To cover a misshapen or discolored tooth
  • To cover a tooth or teeth after root canal therapy

What are the Benefits of Ceramic Crowns?

Crowns can be made of different materials, including gold, silver palladium, and other metal alloys. However, Dr. Furnari prefers ceramic crowns because he can match them to the color of your teeth, making them look and feel most like your natural teeth. He can also customize the size and shape of your crown. MOST importantly by eliminating the metal, Ceramic Crowns have no graying, or dark shadow at the gum line. Essentially all Ceramic Crowns are the most natural.

How do Bridges Work?

Dr. Furnari may suggest a bridge if you are missing one or multiple teeth. Missing teeth leave gaps in your mouth. When you have a gap in your mouth, the teeth adjacent to the gap tend to migrate into the open space. This makes you more susceptible to developing a bad, unaligned bite, which can cause gum disease or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder.

Bridges span the gaps caused by missing teeth. Dr. Furnari bonds the bridge to dental implants or teeth on either side of a gap. These anchoring teeth or implants are called abutments. Similar to crowns, Dr. Furnari can match the color of a ceramic bridge to your remaining teeth.

What To Expect During Crown (Or Bridge) Treatment

Before a crown (or bridge) can be created, Dr. Furnari must shave down the weakened and decayed tooth structure, so the crown will fit over it. Once he is satisfied with the tooth preparation, he takes an impression, or mold. The team then takes a digital photo of the exact shade desired to email to the dental lab with the custom order for your crown.

Dr. Furnari will fit you with temporary crowns to cover any prepared teeth while you wait for the permanent crowns or bridges. You will never leave Scarsdale Dental Group with a missing gap or space in your smile! You will return to the dental office once your permanent crown arrives for final delivery of your new restoration.
